The 38-year-old has signed a two-year deal to replace Rob Elliot, who left to take charge at Carlisle United.

Cattermole has had coaching roles with Middlesbrough, Burnley, Bristol Rovers and Northern Ireland, but this will be his first as a head coach.

Gateshead finished 18th in the National League last season, eight points clear of the relegation zone.

Newcastle to step up Munoz talks

Icon

Newcastle are set to step up talks for Osasunas 22-year-old Spain winger Victor Munoz this week, according to reports in the Daily Mail.

Newcastle's early move for Munoz is a good example of the type of deals they will look to do.

This is more akin to the transfer approach earlier in manager Eddie Howe's tenure when Newcastle brought in the likes of Bruno Guimaraes and Sandro Tonali.

Toyosi Olusanya has signed a two-year deal at Aberdeen following the expiry of his contract with Major League Soccer side Houston Dynamo.

The 28-year-old becomes the Dons fifth addition of the summer and returns to Pittodrie after a successful loan spell during the second half of last season.

Latest from Sky in Italy reporter Gianluca Di Marzio:

Atalanta want to sign Rangers midfielder Nicolas Raskin, according to Sky in Italy.

The 25-year-old is a target for Atalanta's new head coach Maurizio Sarri, whose appointment was confirmed on Monday.

Raskin, who has scored seven goals and provided nine assists for Rangers in all competitions last season, has two years left on his contract at Ibrox.

The Belgium international made his World Cup debut in Monday night's 1-1 draw with Egypt in their Group G opener, making an impact as a second-half substitute with his country equalising 10 minutes after he was brought on.

Summerville on United shortlist with Rashford set to return after World Cup

Manchester United have no plans to engage with Barcelona over another loan for Marcus Rashford after the Spanish champions allowed their 26m option to buy to expire.

Barcelona had until midnight on Monday to make Rashfords move permanent under the agreement struck last summer but, as expected, were unwilling to pay that fee. They have been interested in another loan, but United do not want to entertain that.

Rashford is currently in the US preparing for Englands World Cup opener against Croatia on Wednesday and is expected to return to United once the tournament is over and he has had a short break.

Barca's decision to sign Anthony Gordon, who Rashford is competing with for a starting spot at the World Cup, at the start of the summer for 69m from Newcastle has raised doubts about Rashfords future in Catalonia.

Since Rashford left for Barcelona the expectation has been that we have seen the last of him in a United shirt and Your Site News has been told all parties will continue to work on securing him a permanent move away this summer.

There is a long way to go in the window for Rashfords future to be resolved and Your Site News understands there is a confidence at United that they will find a buyer who is willing to go higher than Barcelonas now expired 26m option price.

Rashford has spent the last 18 months on loan at Aston Villa and Barcelona and last featured for United in December 2024 after he was frozen out by former head coach Ruben Amorim.

Failure to move Rashford on would likely complicate any plans for United to sign a left winger. They have been exploring options in that position with RB Leipzigs Yan Diomande and Evertons Iliman Ndiaye among the players that they are keen on.

West Hams Crysencio Summerville is the latest name to emerge as one of the wingers United have an interest in this summer. The Netherlands international impressed in their World Cup opener, scoring in Sundays 2-2 draw against Japan.

As things stand, Uniteds priority is securing a second midfield signing as they look to bring in Mateus Fernandes from West Ham after agreeing a deal for Atalantas Ederson worth up to 39m. They could add a third central midfielder if Manuel Ugarte departs.

Uniteds plans to sign a left back could take priority over their search for a left winger now it has been decided that Patrick Dorgu will be used in a more advanced role rather than in defence. Lewis Hall and Antonnee Robinson are among Uniteds targets at left back.
