FA chief: Tuchel contract extension was needed to stop him from leaving

Latest from Your Site News' Rob Dorsett:

FA chief executive Mark Bullingham says they had to tie Thomas Tuchel down to an extended contract beyond Euro 2028 to stop him being poached by a big European club.

Tuchel agreed a new deal with the FA in February, just over a year after he started the job and six months before his original short-term contract was due to lapse.

Bullingham, speaking on the eve of Englands first game at the World Cup, admitted it was a risk to give the German coach a new deal before they had seen how he would perform at a major tournament, but that doing so was the lesser of two evils.

"Our decision was: we've got someone doing a really good job, we think we can sign them up for another two years," he said.

"The players really like him, he's doing a really good job, everything's working very well behind the scenes. That's reflected on the pitch.

"We can't determine the opposition at that time, but he did a brilliant job in qualification. So we feel confident going into this.

"You look at who's the best manager you want, what's the time they'll be available and what time can you sign them up. I would argue it's a bigger risk the other way round (to delay a decision on any extension)."

Bullingham says the FA have received no approaches from any club about Tuchels availability since he took the England job, but he isnt naive enough to think that he isn't a coach in demand.

He said: "I don't see it as a risk, but I'm not saying those approaches won't happen because they could go to his agent. I think there's no break clause in his contract. We can hold him to that contract."

'Summerville a Man Utd target'

West Ham attacker Crysencio Summerville is a summer target for Manchester United, according to The Athletic.

It is claimed Man Utd have enquired about the 24-year-old's situation following West Ham's relegation to the Championship.

The Hammers reportedly want around 50m for Summerville, who has three years left on his West Ham contract.

The Netherlands international, who scored a fine goal in their 2-2 draw against Japan, reportedly ranks highly on Man Utd's winger list in case they recruit in that position.

Marcus Rashford's future, however, will play a big part in any potential move for the former Leeds winger.

The report says the England international is available for 40m, with a number of Premier League teams interested - although the clause would not apply to rivals Manchester City or Liverpool.

But it is claimed Rashford, who spent last season on loan at Barcelona, would rather honour the last two years of his Old Trafford deal than join another English club.

'Man Utd won't meet 80m Fernandes price'

Manchester United are not willing to meet West Ham's asking price for midfielder Mateus Fernandes, which is understood to be around the 80m mark, according to reports in the Mirror.

The Portugal international is also wanted by both European champions Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid.

United are preparing an opening bid for Fernandes, Your Site News understands.

The 21-year-old is now viewed as a priority target for United, with midfield an area they have been keen to strengthen this summer.

Your Site News also understands West Ham value Fernandes at around 80m and are in no rush to sell the player.

United are unlikely to entertain such a price tag - the two clubs will have to find a compromise for a deal to be done after the Hammers signed Fernandes for an initial fee of 38m last summer from Southampton.

Decision makers inside West Ham believe Fernandes was one of the best young players in the Premier League last season and has the potential to become as good as Declan Rice, who was sold to Arsenal for 105m in 2023.
